Key West is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Florida, and it is not hard to see why. The wide variety of activities available to vacationers, coupled with Florida’s great weather and beautiful location is appealing to almost everybody. With a slower pace than many of the resort areas of Florida, as well as great accessibility to other parts of the Caribbean, Key West offers opportunities like nowhere else. Whether you’re interested in history, fishing, water sports, art, nature, or just having a relaxing time on the beach, Key West has what you’re looking for. Key West is full of storied historical tradition. You can visit the home of Ernest Hemmingway, have a drink at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, or visit the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, where treasure from famous shipwrecks like the Atocha is on display. There are dozens of parks, museums and points of interest throughout the island, whether you want a photo of yourself at the southernmost point of the United States or a photo of the sharks being fed at the Key West Aquarium, Key West has something to offer the dolphin lover, the Civil War history buff, the ardent shopper and the water sports nut alike, so you can find something fascinating for every member of the family to do. For outdoor activities, Key West offers a smorgasbord of options, both on land and in and under the water. Don’t forget your clubs if you’re a golfer, or your fishing rod if you want to try and hook some snapper, tarpon or redfish. There are a number of Key West fishing charters supplying everything needed to bring in that big fish. There are plenty of parks and beaches for swimming and boating, boat rentals, parasailing, kayaking, scuba diving opportunities and more. For a closer glimpse of the flora and fauna, try booking an eco-tour in a seaplane over the islands, or take the ferry to the Dry Tortugas National Park. If you’d like to do some camping, you could look in to one of the nearby campgrounds or RV parks. There are even some pet-friendly options if you want to bring the dog along. Where Key West really shines as a vacation destination is in the downtown culture. In Mallory Square, there’s the daily Sunset Celebration, where vendors and storytellers gather each evening to entertain visitors daily. Throughout the year, Key West hosts numerous festivals and events, like a conch shell blowing contest or Cuba Week. Downtown, make sure to check what shows are playing and what concerts will be happening during your stay. There’s a wide variety of restaurants, from casual bars with live rock and roll, to fine dining serving up seafood fresh from the nearby ocean and real Key Lime pie, to fine dining on the ocean during a sunset cruise. Shopping opportunities are equally varied, with boutiques boasting jewelry, leatherwork, clothing, art and Key West specialties that can be found nowhere else. Accommodation options are equally varied. If you’re looking for a place near the nightlife, try a bed and breakfast or motel in the downtown. There are Key West hotels closer to the marinas if you don’t want to miss a second of time on the water. For a relaxing spot with all the amenities, there are a number of luxurious full-service resorts with Spanish or Caribbean influences, where you can order room service and lay out by the pool alone or with your sweetheart. And if that isn’t pampering enough, there are spas throughout the island where you can indulge in a relaxing massage or other special vacation indulgence. Still another choice is to rent one of the many Key West vacation houses available for weekly rental. No matter where you stay, you’ll never be too far from something great to do on your Key West vacation. Our favorite bar in Key West is Schooner Wharf. Here you will find some of the best tropical cocktails available anywhere.
