Islamorada Village of Islands

Islamorada, also called called the Village of Islands, is a great place for a vacation on the water, no matter what you want to do once you get there. Unlike many of the other towns in the Keys, Islamorada is actually comprised of a group of keys: Lower and Upper Matecumbe Keys, Windley Key and Plantation Key. It also covers the smaller islands of Tea Table Key, Indian Key and Lignumvitae Key. The whole set of keys is linked by the highway, and as you travel from island to island you’ll encounter a huge range of activities to try.

Dubbed “the sport fishing capital of the world”, Islamorada is a prime place to go for many types and styles of fishing, and catch-and-release tournaments are held at multiple times during the year. With an enormous fishing fleet scattered throughout the keys, you’ll have no trouble finding a boat to take you out to try your hand at landing a prime sailfish, or into the backcountry of Florida Bay to stalk elusive bonefish, tarpon and snook.

Other water sports have their place on Islamorada as well, but make sure you check on any marine restrictions before you go out in your jetski or watercraft. Divers have both the Florida Keys Reef and numerous shipwrecks to explore, and dive shops are highly accommodating; offering equipment rentals, lessons, and both day and night diving. If you prefer to stay near the surface, there is some great snorkeling to be had as well. Back on shore, the History of Diving Museum is a great place to check out if you prefer not to get your feet wet.

If you’d like to get a closer look at some of the wildlife, Islamorada offers a number of different options. Theater of the Sea lets you swim with rays and dolphins. Several other outfitters offer eco-tours, which can be a great option for families looking for something different to do with the kids. Going birding or kayaking can be a great way to see Islamorada in a different light, and there are sunset sails or houseboat rentals for the couple looking for an escape from the ordinary. Try Islamorada Founders Park if you’d like to stretch your legs and play a game of bocce or tennis.

In the downtown shopping area, Islamorada offers a great selection of shops for anyone looking to take home a memento or two of their time in the Keys. Boutiques and galleries are packed with art, apparel and gifts that can be found nowhere else. For relaxation, try one of the spas, where you can get a relaxing specialty massage, take a yoga class, or pamper yourself with a facial or manicure. Be sure to try out some of the local restaurants, where they serve up fresh-from-the-ocean seafood. Some places will even cook you dinner from fish you catch yourself. There are a few bars for those looking for some nightlife, and resort hotels if all you really want to do on vacation is relax and enjoy the sunshine.

The Moorings Village is our favorite place to stay in this part of the Keys. Being located right in the middle of the Keys gives it a perfect location.
