You may be surprised to learn that there are over 1700 islands that make up the Florida Keys. Although many of these islands are very small and can be reached only by boat, the following six locations are easy to get to and make a fantastic destination for a memorable tropical get-away vacation:
The Florida Keys curve gently to the southwest off the southern tip of Florida for about 200 miles. The last island cluster is the Dry Tortugas which can not be reached by car and is the southern most point of the United States. The Dry Tortugas are actually closer to Cuba than to mainland Florida. The 126 mile stretch that can be driven to is connected by a series of 42 bridges built over what was once a railroad route. The mostly two lane trip to Key West can be slow going at times being heavily travelled and offering no optional routes, but the views along the way make it very enjoyable. The mile markers of this route are the universally used (at least in the Keys) method of determining the location of a bar, dive shop or cottage.
Many famous Americans have spent a good portion of their life in the Florida Keys. Some of these tropic lovers are Jimmy Buffett, Truman Capote, and Ernest Hemingway. These larger than life individuals can give you an idea of the powerful draw and diverse people attracted to the Keys. In addition to more traditional boating activities, kayaking has really grown in popularity in a number of areas in the Keys and can be a great way to get up close and personal with a variety of flora and fauna in the Keys. From small cottage style rentals to large resorts the Keys has it all and then some! Some of the best bars and seafood dining anywhere can be found throughout the Keys. Ask a few of the locals to get the straight story on where to go. (We mention a few of our favorites elsewhere on the site.) We hope you take advantage of a Florida Keys vacation in the near future and we expect that you will fall in love with the region as much as we have.
