Duck Key

A laid-back island without the crowds, Duck Key is the perfect place for a relaxed, family-friendly vacation. Duck Key has quiet beaches with all the beauty of the upper Keys, but without the crush of more popular mainland areas. There are numerous picnic areas and plenty of pet-friendly locations for those who want to bring along Fido. There are campgrounds for tents, campers and RVs and plenty of places along the shore to just sit and look out at the ocean or lagoon. A small island, Duck Key was once the site of a salt mining operation, but industry has since been closed down. Now, it is home to many great vacation spots.

For the traveler looking for Florida vacation without roughing it, Duck Key also offers rentals, from small rental homes to the luxurious Hawk’s Cay Resort and Marina, which offers wedding packages for couples looking for a beautiful place to tie the knot. Whether you want a little bungalow, a beautiful hotel room, room for the whole family or a place to escape from it all, Duck offers you options. Here is more information on some of the popular Duck Key hotels.

Hawk’s Cay Marina offers boat charters for those who want to try out saltwater fishing. All types of fishing opportunities are available throughout the Key, from deep sea, flats, back country or offshore fishing. For the non-fisherman, there are great diving and snorkeling opportunities. Other water sport options include jet skiing and boating. If you plan to try any sport on the water, you will need to make sure you are aware of all rules and restrictions on when and where you can take your watercraft, as well as abide by all safety regulations for its use. If you need navigational charts or a copy of the safety regulations, you can contact the Florida Marine Patrol or the Tourist Board.

A few miles away, on nearby Grassy Key, you can visit the Dolphin Research Center, where you can take a tour the facility, watch trainers working with the animals, or swim with the dolphins yourself. A little further down the road is Marathon, which offers more shopping and sightseeing opportunities while remaining within a short distance of the beaches. Depending on what time of year you visit, you may be able to take part in one of the many tours or festivals that are put on throughout the Keys. For example: if you arrive in the Keys in February, you might be able to take part in a Fun Run, experience an art festival, take a garden tour or do some specially sponsored diving. The Keys are full of unusual activities that break you out of a regular vacationing routine, although they have plenty to offer for the traveler who just wants to relax as well.
